Despite feeling generally positive when I hear his tunes, a couple of things have reminded me of his frailty recently. Luckily, Dodge and Burn is the best Dead Weather record to date as well as standing up very well next to any of the work White has ever created. Where previous albums by the group have fallen a little short, here they hit all the correct dirty notes. From there, the album barely lets up. It also shows off Mosshart at her best on this record. This Mosshart is powerful, more rock than indie, and here to make an impression.

It's entirely possible that when Jack White allegedly threatened to beat up Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney in a New York City bar earlier this month he was doing some street-team marketing for the new Dead Weather record. The mid-album knockout "Rough Detective" sees the two trading verses and pushing one another to hysterical extremes; instead of dropping the typical guitar solo after the second shout-it-out chorus, the song yields a carnival-like melee of chopped-up chatter and pitch-shifted squeals. But Mosshart once again handles the heavy vocal lifting with menace to spare, be it the frisky sing-speak of "Mile Markers", the predatory soul stomp of "Let Me Through", or the violent mood swings of "Open Up", which upends its desolate opening verse with a riff straight off an early Rush record. But tacked onto the end of another dependably dank Dead Weather record, the song feels less like a graceful break-of-dawn denouement than the musical equivalent of being awakened in the middle of the night by a flashlight to the face. The Dead Weather - Dodge and Burn ALBUM REVIEW
The Dead Weather : Dodge and Burn
While a bit jarring when paired with the rest of Dodge and Burn , taken on its own it is extremely successful, showcasing Mosshart in a strong new light. Ending on this unique number indicates the band is more democratic and forward looking than ever. With Horehound, The Dead Weather introduced their leather clad 3am smokey style to the world. Things were then honed into silver bullet precision with Sea of Cowards firing as a cohesive screed against the offending masses. Dodge and Burn feels more searching yet still swaggeringly confident and dangerous, as all great rock and roll should. A bass player by trade, when not setting the rhythm for New York City-based Angels and Vagabonds, Shawn writes reviews, interviews and feature articles.
But not enough is said about how the twosome, along with keyboardist Dean Fertita Queens of the Stone Age and bassist Jack Lawrence The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes , casually marries muddy blues with hard-rocking riffs, eclectic rhythms, and howling punk energy. Lost in all the star power is just how effortlessly experimental this music can be. - Back in black!
