Fire Island is a mile Most of Fire Island National Seashore is on the island. There are no paved roads going to most of the island and vehicle traffic is not permitted in summer. A plan to create a paved road across the island resulted in such resistance that it was abandoned. Over the years each of the island's seventeen communities has developed its own unique personality. Several of the villages restrict access by tourists or do all they can to be unwelcoming of tourists.

With about homes within its block town limits, the town has everything anyone might want with a few stores, a restaurant and a pizza shop, giving it old-style charm with the security of a state-of-the-art Fire Department and EMS. The Fair Harbor Community Association FHCA was created to give the town a unified voice in matters of civic interest and to provide residents with amenities. Pick up in Manhattan is near 53rd St.

The absence of motor vehicles seems to reinforce the effect. Fire Island is loaded with natural attractions, bars, restaurants, beaches and shops, so you and your family will have plenty to see and do. There are 17 or so unique communities on the island that swell with residents and tourists each summer. There are even two gay communities that draw thousands of visitors every year. Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines are well known for their predominately gay population and sometimes outrageous nightlife. It is not uncommon to hear people speaking in foreign, sometimes unidentifiable by me anyway languages. Map courtesy of the National Park Service.

With the return of beach season, so too flock the crowds to Fire Island, the barrier island simultaneously known as a popular tourist destination and a hidden gem full of natural wonders. But Fire Island is much more than that dichotomy allows. And in the middle, accessible by ferry only, are 17 car-free communities—most of which are strictly residential with a few having downtowns offering shops and nightlife. You are not whizzing by your neighbors at 50 mph in a car on your way to the mall. That quality of life itself is worth preserving not only for residents, but for people who come to visit our Island—for a day trip, or a stay at the Fire Island Hotel or perhaps to rent a house. It has about 4, homes and its year-round population of about residents swells to an estimated 20, during summer months—plus daytrippers.

Fire Island is the large center island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of the mainland of Long Island. Its land area is 9. It lies within the towns of Babylon , Islip , and Brookhaven , containing two villages and a number of hamlets. All parts of the island not within village limits are part of the Fire Island census-designated place CDP , which had a permanent population of at the United States Census , [2] though that expands to thousands of residents and tourists during the summer months. Every year on the fourth of July hundreds of drag queens board the ferry from Cherry Grove to The Pines in a reenactment of the act of solidarity now known as the " Invasion of the Pines ".
