Millions are mourning the death of Christopher Reeve today who passed away at the age of 52 from heart failure. Chris was a dear personal friend of Jane Seymour and James Keach. When asked about her favorite co stars, Jane has always named Christopher Reeve, describing the time she spent with him filming the cult classic Somewhere in Time as the best experience she has ever had on a film set. Since the accident that paralyzed him in , Jane has referred to Chris as her inspiration, a friend who had come to mean so much to her that she named one of her twin sons after him. Those of us who never had the opportunity to meet Chris Reeve on such a personal level, will remember him as a man who refused to give up and who used his own personal pain to help heal others by working tirelessly toward a cure for spinal chord injuries. Although many saw Christoper Reeve as a hero, Christopher never saw himself that way,but instead insisted that it was the everyday people living with disabilities who are the real heros. Our hearts go out to his family, to Jane and James and his friends, and to the millions who saw in him the promise of hope that sadly he himself never saw fulfilled.
P eople who know me know I am spontaneous, and determined "to go for it", as those who read my story INSITE's July '91 issue can attest, and I guess I proved them right again, when I flew off to New York with one day notice to have a "reunion" of sorts with Christopher Reeve, who I hadn't seen in person since the making of Somewhere In Time , 14 years before. I couldn't have been more pleased at the results of my endeavor - the evening that Chris provided for the approximately 90 in the audience was fascinating, and he was delightfully animated while relating to us anecdotes along with his philosophy of acting he has acquired throughout his career, what he refers to as his "journey". Chris came into the room just moments before being introduced. He was wearing a grayish-lavender matte silk shirt, a grayish-blue silk sportcoat and olive, purple and gray-blue tie, and his ever-present jeans. I at first thought the class would be more "structured", with a format perhaps, but Chris began with a brief history of how and why he got into acting, and then just allowed us to bombard him with questions, for two and a half hours. And the group, a mixed bag of ages and backgrounds--the majority of them actors, and would-be hopefuls --provided him with a good variety of topics to respond to, which made for a well-rounded program.
Seymour's arrival at the Grand Hotel this week made the annual "Somewhere in Time" weekend unforgettable for the more than attendees, who came from five countries and 31 states. The year-old actress has only visited the popular Michigan destination a handful of times in the 35 years since making the film -- including in when she was filming "Dear Prudence" in the Grand Rapids area. A popular destination on the island is the beach just down from the Grand Hotel where a plaque marking the spot Seymour's character Elise McKenna famously asks Richard Collier, played by Reeves, "Is it you? The cult time travel romance filmed on the island in and released the following year. The Grand Hotel even has a "Somewhere in Time" suite with paintings of scenes from the film. She was also given a 25th Anniversary plaque from Ken Hayward, the Grand Hotel's executive vice president. Seymour posted a few videos on Facebook about the visit, including one of her in a white lace dress similar to the one she wore in the film.

Richard Collier Christopher Reeve is a playwright who while suffering writers' block, travels to the sea side to collect his thoughts. While waiting for the restaurant to open, he decides to take a little walk down Memory Lane in a room full of displays and memorabilia from the Hotel's history. He is thoroughly taken by her, but doesn't know why. Eight years earlier, at the opening of a play he had written as a senior in college. At that time, this was a total mystery.
