I was a bit startled when I read the title of this compilation and it struck me that Yo La Tengo have been making records for almost 20 years now. As artists who have always followed their own path, Yo La Tengo have been making timeless music ever since they first started out, and if that description sounds a bit grand, little of the stuff on this set suggests the moment in rock history in which it was recorded "Little Eyes" from 's Summer Sun sits comfortably beside "Lewis" from 's New Wave Hot Dogs , and you can't say that about the work of many other bands that were considered hip in either year , so until the band and Matador Records chose to point it out to me, I never gave much thought to how long they'd been doing this stuff. Still mixing up folk, noise, pop, and indie rock after all this time, and still doing it with melodic intelligence and joy, Yo La Tengo don't seem like likely candidates for a career retrospective -- their average fan owns all of their albums, and with nearly all of their material in print, it's not as if curious newbies have limited options for checking out their music.

Including demos of 'Big Day Coming' and acoustic versions of 'Decora' and 'Tom Courteney' it also features the Kevin Shields remix of 'Autumn Sweater', previously a much sought after Japanese bonus cut. With extensive liner notes from Byron Coley and Joe Puleo, this thoughtfully packaged collection will act as the perfect introduction for those not familiar with Yo La Tenga as well as a blinding reminder for those who are as to why they are still accorded such respect at US rock's head table. Elsewhere 'Barnaby, Hardly Working' resembles a New Order from a parallel universe, 'Did I Tell You' is an esculently catchy slice of bittersweet west-coast acoustic rock whilst their cover of Sun Ra's 'Nuclear War' shows they are just as comfortable with staccato rhythm led, dead-pan rock sloganeering. Just like one of those big Art Attack murals, by standing back and looking at their career in this manner the patterns and influences that have stemmed from Yo La Tenga's visionary approach to rock become blindingly apparent. Awesome music — a total steal. Highly Recommended!! We take the security of our website and of your transactions extremely seriously.

It's hard to imagine too many people buying Yo La Tengo's Ride The Tiger in expecting the band to still be around nearly 20 years later. -
